How to Measure Your Gauge

  1. Knit a Swatch: Always knit a square larger than 10cm (ideally 15cm x 15cm) using the stitch pattern from your project.

  2. Wash and Block: This is critical. Many fibers “bloom” or grow once wet. Measure your gauge only after the swatch has dried.

  3. Count the Stitches: Place your Ashford Yarn Gauge Tool over the center of the swatch.

    • Stitches: Count horizontally along the 10cm (4″) window.

    • Rows: Count vertically along the 10cm (4″) window.

Description

Why Gauge Matters (The “Fit” Factor)

If a pattern calls for 20 stitches per 10cm, but your personal tension results in 18 stitches, your finished garment will be significantly larger than intended. Conversely, if you knit tighter and get 22 stitches, the garment will be too small.

The Three Variables of Gauge:

  1. Needle/Hook Size: Larger needles create larger, looser stitches.

  2. Yarn Weight: Thicker yarns naturally occupy more space.

  3. Personal Tension: Your unique “hand”—how tightly you pull the yarn—is the final deciding factor.
